Challenge Article "Dump fuel duty and have carbon tax instead"

I assume Simon intended his article to be provocative - it certainly had the steam coming from my ears - the problem is that Challenge is not a good vehicle for discussion.1) "tax motorists"  - there is not a human sub-species called "motorists" just an activity "driving". Fuel duty taxes an activity not a group of people. 2) Net effect on households. Overall if the government revenues are not to change the costs to consumers will not change either but this would not be uniform. People who…See More

Coalition cycling investment

An interesting collision in your news items :Julian Huppert  : "It is absolutely essential people should be able to walk to work or cycle to school in a safe environment. The extra £8m for Sustrans will go a long way to achieving this."Judith Lubbock   : "The Times also suggests that two per cent of the Highway's Agency budget should be earmarked for cycling providing about £100 million a year."The Times is hardly a cheerleader for tax and spend but its estimate suggests that the £8m for…See More

Threat to Cycling England

There seems to be a serious threat to the Government's input into bicycling promotion. Sustrans is just a provincial charity. Christian Wolmar puts it better that I could. also in the…See More

Faith School Menace

Richard Dawkins at his most affable last Wednesday tucked away on Four Plus. should be compulsory viewing for MPs.I was shocked to hear that OFSTEAD does not inspect RE lessons in faith schools. In the Muslim school featured the biology teacher seemed pleased that none of her pupils accepted evolution - and some of those wanted to be doctors. The whole idea of putting…See More

Hello Paul, my name is Raymond Lawrie and I am only just getting familiar with how to use this site. I have, after some time, managed to get a blog online and am awaiting approval for another. I have also worked out how to leave comments on my own page and others, which may or may not be a good thing.

I have looked at the site several times and although there is a wide range of content I think we should be more active in looking at and understanding what is really driving the coalition and essentially what drives the Conservatives.

My fist blog is rather long and you are, of course, at no obligation to read it, but if you do I would be grateful for your comments regardless of them being positive, negative, confusing or creative!

Thankyou Paul
