The English Riots and the "Death Of Liberalism"

So now that the smoke has disappated, the police are in force, and calm has been restored to the streets, the inquest has begun. Or the blame game. Depends on your point of view. The riots of the past four days have been the worst in the UK (and possibly in Europe) for decades. Certainly, I doubt there has been such widespread breakdown of law and order in Britain for a hundred years or more. During the Depression, I didn't read of any such looting and destruction ever happening on such a scale…See More

Riots, Gangs and Social Cohesion.

Tottenham, London, can now be added to the list of cities in the Western world (i.e Europe and America) that have seen riots in recent years. In the last week, even Tel Aviv, Israel (of all places) has joined the ranks of the more famous anarchy-prone metropoli such as Athens an Madrid, to name two.That's not to mention the riots and civil strife happening on a daily basis in Syria, sporadically in Yemen, Egypt; civil war in Libya etc. etc.Of course, the riots of the last few years each have…See More

A Future Campaign Slogan, and a credible future within the Coalition

My concern is regarding the future position that the Liberal Democrats should take where is comes to a future campaign slogan. The party needs one that effectively summarises our postiion in government, as well as maintaining our loyalties to our values as a party. I feel a good campaign slogan for the future could be: "Fighting For A Fairer Britain" Here's why: because the LibDems best represent the values of fairness and progressive politics; because, although we often haven't had our own way…See More

Two beds

“What is it like to end up in bed with the Tories?" Shirley Williams: "Not one bed, two beds." The coalition is an experiment in grown-up government but must also be a launch pad for Liberalism, not a slide into decline.See More

Lib Dems: The Way Forward

The way forward for the LibDems is to focus on the "middle ground" that most people identify with, by appealing to policies that are innately realistic, sensible, rational, and inclusive. The "Progressive" movement can be key part of that. It simply requires the right sort of approach. The innate strength that the LibDems have is by appealing not to particular interests (the unions and traditional Socialism, as Labour do; or the free market Monetarists and established rich, as the Conservatives…See More

Tuition fees

As some people have been confused about where the revelation about the "Tuition fees U-turn" leaves the LibDem position' let's remind ourselves what breaking a pledge really means to the average person on the street.There is such a thing as "breach of contract" which exists in British law (unless I've got my facts wrong).While I am not saying that such a pledge made my the LibDems be liable to be sued (who would be qualified to make such a claim in any case? And should it apply when ANY party…See More

Learning the lessons and returning to "financial normalcy"

Realistically, what can we do to get voters turned back on to the merits of the LibDems?

For a start, having a set of policies that can create "financial normalcy" after the wreckage of the financial crisis.

What I mean by "financial normalcy" is a position where:

banks are not rewarded (preferably actively discouraged) for taking ridiculous risks;

they do not hand out huge sums of credit to people who have next to no savings;

we have a system where…

Financial Responsibility and the Financial Crisis

To be sure, the way that the Financial Crisis and the cuts have been dealt with by the Conservatives could be argued to be like a weapon of mass financial destruction on the wider population of the UK.

Let's examine the evidence:

To begin with, what measures have the Conservatives put in place to prevent the Crisis from happening again? None.

What lessons did the banks learn from their behaviour? None.

Did the banks pay for their mistake? No

Did the government…

I don't see any reason why you should not stand as a candidate for a Councillor ! London is a big city with many boroughs and many seats to fight for. To stand as a candidate for a Councillor, you have to be a Member for atleast 12 months. You will need two people from the party to give you a reference. It is wise to live in the area where you wish to represent the people, so local peope know you and you are familiar with local issues. It is also wise to get involved with the Local Party and work as a team, from an early stage. Fighting elections is all about team work !

Hello Lee, There is a shortage of English teachers in London. As you know many foreigners usually come to London - being the capital city of the world ! Salim.

ps: My involvement with the LibDems includes everything !
