It's controversial. It's complicated. It's sensitive. It's the Spending Review.

Pretty Good For a Tory...

As one conference closes, another opens...

David Cameron strode into the Conservative Conference in his usual, striking, arrogant confidence; the pure arrogance, when you can almost see "born to rule" self inscribed across his forehead...

This was of course his first appearance at Conference as Prime Minister but little did he know that several days later he would be facing the fury of his own supporters...

By Wednesday, he would be mauled by his own… Continue

Another Day in 'Libdemdom'...

By Sunday, I had just about got used to finding myself stood just metres away from Nick Clegg, Simon Hughes, Vince Cable or someone of equal epicness from the party...

As a result of a delayed breakfast and the added distraction of the Andrew Marr show on in the hotel lobby, I sadly missed most of the speech by Tavish Scott which I had aimed to see that morning.

Therefore, my first full session was the Consultative Session on Strategy from 10.40am-12.10pm.

Don't be fooled… Continue

And when you pass security for what feels like the 100th time; it finally hits you. You're at the Liberal Democrat Conference. And we're in Government.

Conference... Conference... Conference...

"Initially daunting, then it becomes interesting...

...and surprisingly right wing."

Art Malik (Actor and supporter of the Liberal Democrats) on his first experience of conference.

Daunting? Yes.

Interesting? Definitely.

Right wing? Not so sure.

This blog will differ from the usual style.

Unlike usual, I'd like to talk about my own experience; my experience as a first-timer at the Lib Dem Conference… Continue

It is a bit daunting, yes, but hopefully it'll go well :-)

The barbecue sounds cool: I'm actually meeting up with Dan Ridler (who works for the Lib Dem MP for St Austell and Newquay) tomorrow, so that will hopefully go well. No doubt I will also get asked lots of political questions too!

Regrettably I can't go to the Lib Dem conference as I'll be working then, bah. But I hope to make the next one! You'll have to let me know how it goes, sounds v exciting :-)

I'm sorry to hear about your grandparents :( Though if it cheers you up, I met a fellow Lancastrian last Monday in Falmouth who happens to be the brother of one of my Uni friends :-D

Hello Emma! Long time no speak. Just thought I'd let you know I might be getting interviewed for an internship with the Lib Dem MP in Cambridge. Fingers crossed! How's things in Lancashire?

78 points? That's almost a manifesto :P

Osborne is talking a foreign language, it's called economic Jargon :) I find it hard to understand even when Vince is talking about it, though he's a bit more clear!

I use other mediums of contact other than Lib Dem Act, y'know... though presumably you have yet to fully discover the joys/evils of Facebook and the like?

I know, I read your blog yesters. Good stuff, keep it up! Also, I fear for your kitchen, heh.

That's good to know. On the plus side for me, I just got a high 2:1 from my degree: just above 65%, woo! :-D

It does indeed, but doing good + favourite is always a winner. It's probably what I should have done, but ah well!

I actually covered the Vietnam War independently, as we had a massive textbook for GCSE and I ended up reading all of it. The My Lai massacre is always particularly nasty to read about, even when you know how it ends. Not pleasant. I'd recommend reading about the Nanjing Massacre in China in 1937. Similarly outrageous, even more brutal, but it's a good thing to have read about. Still very much a hot potato in Asian politics these days. And thank you, I like to think I am relatively well-informed :-)

I believe it will be for about a month, with a look to extending it further. At least, that's the plan!

You never know, that might well be good news for the coalition. If Labour are found to have messed up, that makes it less likely that they'll be able to get back into power anytime soon. Plus inflation is slowing, which is always a good sign for the economy. Who knows at this point though?

Exams are never fun when you lose track of time! At least you didn't faint... someone did that in my exam. Very distracting, for one thing!

Fair enough: to be fair, I only did those subjects because I was good at them. Probably should have done English and Music instead, but how was I to know?

Ah, but what will you do if there is conservation work with the Conservatives? The ultimate dilemma... I'd advise using your contacts to the max: someone who works at a supermarket for example.

I have indeed made progress, I've got an internship sorted for August with Andrew George MP! Hurrah and hurray!

Independent inquiry? Led by whom? I will have to check this out...

Hehe, I was thinking more the fact that the Lib Dem student base in Sheffield is relatively strong and thus you would make lots of friends. But if you'd prefer to stalk Nick Clegg... :P

I think I will have to be jobhunting for quite some time before I even consider McDonalds! One of my friends worked for them for a year or so and he hated it, even though he was able to "rise through the ranks" pretty quickly.

That sounds like a good mix: I did German and History also (high five), then French and Maths. Fun times! And yes, 2007 does seem a while back... Well done on finishing Maths, I presume it feels the same as when I finished Sciences forever (booyah)...

I've actualy been in Cambridge this weekend looking for workage, made a few inroads: am now in regular contact with the St Ives Lib Dem people. Could make progress today: fingers crossed!
