Lets Get a 'Yes' Vote in The Alternative Vote Referendum On May 5th 2011

For all those who are liberal and also want the voting system to be.The First Past The Post system hands power to the lucky few who live in marginal constituencies and sucks it away from the vast majority of us who do not.

Yeah me too. They don't listen to everything. I know Nick has tried in his speeches etc, but some people just don't get it.

Lol. I'd love to moderate that site. May offer my services. ha ha I noticed that the Lib Dem website and Nick's section are out of date too.

That's awful what they wrote about Cameron. It's sometimes hard to believe there's actually people out there like that. The news caught me when I was having a kinda stressful day at work and I found myself crying when I saw the news about how he flew there and was just in time and how his dad hadn't met Florence yet. The day caught up with me!

No problem. Rant away! Lol. I've only met Lib Dem Councillors in my ward. They seem okay. Haven't met any Labour ones :)

I only re-joined the party a couple of months ago. Used to be a member years and years ago when David Steel was leader. I'd like to meet him someday.

I just got called a Tory by someone whose vocabulary only consists of swear words on Nick's facebook site.

I wish someone would moderate that site properly - or else give me the job! I'll sort it out! Lol.

I don't know why people are kicking off before things have really started happening. One guy claimed he was out of a job because of cut backs which haven't even started yet!

Hi Carl.

No problem. We need to support each other and stick up for Nick.

There's some nutters on that page. Lol.

Tracy :)

"Walking The Ward" usually early evening two or three times a week is a good start, Carl

Take a notebook with you, and note anything on each street that requires attention before you begin knocking on doors, and, more important than you doing the talking, ask specific questions, and, most of all, LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN, being seen to make notes if you want electors to trust you - nobody likes being lectured.

The plan is to co-opt a member of "Carl's Crew" on every street and in each local organisations from children's clubs, to OAP gatherings, and social groups which the local authority can help.

If there are retirement, blind, deaf and disabled homes in the Ward, ensure you have signed up as many postal votes as possible - if you help them, they are much more likely to vote for you come Election Day.

Oh, and most importantly, join ALDC, and get hold of their local government manuals on how to win - ALDC is the single most important Party body to have been winning seats for the Libs since the early 1970s.

You can win without them, but you are far more likely to win if you study their formula and consistently put it into practice.

What wins elections:
Knocking on as many doors in the Ward as possible;
Identifying the LD votes and probables:
Arranging to get them all to the poll either via Postal Votes or in person.
Simple really - whoever polls most votes (in First Past The Post) wins.
Good fortune with enthusing enough people to deliver leaflets (if you can afford them) and to canvass - a group going out together always feels and looks best.
I look forward to your report as the by-election progresses - getting an attractive, dynamic, forceful candidate is essential, and you are heading towards being one sooner rather than later.
Even though we were in very minority opposition, I enjoyed my two spells as a Borough Councillor, both after by-election wins in the early 1980s. God, is it really that long ago?

Sorry it has taken me a while to get around to welcoming you to the NW Group, Carl.

I must say that when I first joined it was Libs at regional level who taught me most about how to organise regular meetings, how to fight local elections (I tried to attend as a helper every by-election in the NW), parliamentary by-elections (David Alton's 1979 win in Edge Hill as well as many more), and how to get to know people in the wider Party - the people in Blackpool seemed much more interested in Supper Clubs and Sunday Lunchtime Drinks Parties than in campaigning to get things done.
You can learn a great deal especially from members in places where the LDs are strong enough not just at local council level, but have persevered to get LD MPs elected. Although we did not win the Thirsk & Malton By-election, the Agent there, Mike Beckett, (who is here on LD ACT) is probably the first person you should get to know to learn from his very recent experience.
Do hope you continue to enjoy yourself - enthusiasm can make up for lack of experience as long as you are open to those who have lived the life and continue to do so.

WOW ...i've heard of reverse snobbery, but reverse AGEISM?...judging by your pic, you have most of your life ahead of you... most of mine's behind me:- so please allow me the benefit, if not of wisdom, at least of knowledge and experience.....i'm a rare beast, carl:- instead of getting more comfortable and right-wing as i get older, i just get angrier at the inequalities and injustices i see multiplying round me.
at 18 months old, i, my mum and my brother were chucked out of RAF married quarters when my dad died....
so,homeless, destitute, a friend of my mum's took us in....even so, educationally , i was so much better off than kids these days....and, yes, real communities existed, because (apart from the TOFFS) we were all in the same boat--skinny,but happy.
