We decided to establish a policies working party to research and recommend SLF policies  on social issues within the LD party. There is also to be a Midlands branch and committee members are sought. I'll publicise our meetings on this site but you can also look at the Social Liberal Forum site for more info. Thank goodness we are alive and kicking and rewady for Fed Conference....

Quite agree - I get so angry with letters in the papers - 'name and address supplied'! If you don't have the courage of your convictions to put your real name there then don't bother writing in the first place. Apart from anything else it is bad manners!!!

The irony of a 'real liberal' talking about forcing people to listen doesn't make up for the absence of a real name. I think people should register with their real name or not at all.

The problem is that many people don't want to listen. They need to be made to hear about how Lib Dems are making a real difference in Government. People should be made to listen for their own good.

At the end of the day we will be judged at the next General Election, whenever that will be. The only way to achieve success is to make sure that the electorate fully understands what they are doing or have done and what the outcome has been for the benefit of most people!

I don't think MPs can change party policy at all, and I've not seen any of them claim otherwise. What they can do is to try to bring coalition policy closer to something we can accept, and lend their support to coalition policy once they are satisfied that it is the best compromise attainable.

As a member of the government, it will be the job of MPs within our party to promote the benefits of many coalition policies that are not wholly in accord with party policy. This does not mean they have changed our party policy, nor that they have forgotten it.

If these MPs say "This is the closest we can come to our policy for now, please support it" then I feel we should all be giving them less grief about the gaps that could not be closed between the two and more support for taking us as far as they have.

These words bring to mind the words in one of the G&S Operetta's - I think mayb e the Lord High Executioner in the Mikado - where he sings about always voting for his party cause!!!! So some things never change!!!! W S Gilbert was sending up the Government at the end of the 19th Century when it was only Liberals and Conservatives!!!

I have been reading your arguments with interest and I do believe that we have to stay in government as the social conscience of the Conservative party. My main concern is the future of our party because our MPs are saying very clearly that they can change party policy without a conferenc debate. That is not how the Lib Dems make policy. OK. we can all email them with our advice re voting on tuition fees but it can never take the place of a full conference debate and vote. Who should Lib Dem MPs follow -HMG or the party???

You mean Tory or Labour infiltrators who are bereft of their own ideas!

Eat The Rich, I don't now what you are trying to prove. So, Simon copied and pasted some words which he thought very neatly summarised his thoughts - I take it you have never done that? And I agree with the words he used too - well done to Simon and Sandra. I find it ironic all these people who join ':Act' in November (probably Labourites or Tories - but certainly not Lib Dem Activists or else they would have joined before), not having the decency to put their own name, just to make emotive and badly evidenced arguments.
