Nick Clegg Meets...

Politicians have let people down, they feel disconnected from the old, Westminster-based style of politics. I am determined to change that & why I host open invitation public meetings across the UK & have been doing so since I became Party Leader.

Dear Nick, I can't tell you how sorry I am about the parlous state you have put yourself, your party and most of all us, the people in siding with the Tories. It was I believe the worst decision you could have made.
You spout the Tory line about the economic mess and I think, you may actually believe it. I do not pretend that siding with labour would have been much better, but possibly driven by a little more social conscience might have alleviated some of the Tory dogma and excesses we are enduring.
Our public services are being decimated, privatised and destroyed all to enable a few more millionaires become billionaires.

If the private sector is good, please show us clear evidence. Don't show balance sheets and p&l accounts or dividend statements because most of us are not shareholders or city boys. Instead show us how the private sector has made services better, whilst at these time improved pensions and working conditions. I betook can't do that, do show us how this vaunted elite of private sector managers is actually any different to the public sector.

Show us how the cherry picking by the private sector will in any way meet the needs of the whole of society, show us how the race in the "me first" society improves equality or redistributed wealth. Tell me why the richest in society have gotten richer since you sided with the Tories. Teller of hopes you have for being re-elected because I need something to make me laugh.

I wish our leader would stop advocating referenda. We have a system of representative democracy in the UK, not one of direct democracy. We are not some backward Swiss canton and it is wholly unconstitutional to call on the people to take some decisions, but not others. We elect and pay the MPs to represent us and to govern. Let them do so.

Only 2 LibDem lords voted against the NHS bill today.

God help the generations who have to struggle with the consequences of this coalition, which has stubbornly followed the Tories in disestablishing our health and education sectors, these are the most damaging social and economic reforms for generations, all recourse and chances are now over, all eyes are now on 2015 and the inevitable downfall of the party.

Well said, its hell in those areas for children and women left defenseless alone without a voice or any support

where the police social services family court media politicians etc run riot with impunity

the riots, its easy to say this is thugery and mindless violance, but why, what caused it, one gun shot no that wasnt it that was simply what released the tension thats been building for years

most of the rioters were all teanagers why what has made them have so little respect for the law and the goverment, if they were older i would say yes shortage of jobs etc all the usuall things, but no these are young teenagers, this can only be blamed on society and what is happening within it,

when you go on the st to ask questions you should be asking how many of there lives have been damaged due to social services, how many have had family members stollen by forced adoption, how many have been put in care where they lost everything they loved and cared about possibly even been abused in care, due to social services and the family court system very few people have faith in the law any more

i believe what we have seen recently is only the start concider this to be the earth tremour before the earth quack, if there isnt serious changes quickly this country is going to explode

Regarding the lack of government leadership during the London riots, Nick Clegg said:

"I reject completely this notion that somehow this Government hasn't been functioning very effectively", and 'We have arranged things to make sure that this government works effectively on all the issues of the day. We are in constant contact with each other."

Well, by that definition, perhaps the ministers responsible feel that their presence is so pointless that they should consider disbanding their postiions in government? If, in the 21st century, all government business can be done by networking across the continents, when why waste taxpayers money even more?

"Gesture politics" was something Tony Blair was criticised for doing too much of, but in this case we have riots in London that are unprecedented in modern times. Leaders have a duty to be visible in times of crisis.

Even Gordon Brown, who was lambasted for his lack of media skills, got that point (consider his fast and visible reaction to the flooding and foot and mouth outbreak in the summer of 2007, not to mention the financial crisis).

Comments as these by Nick Clegg put him in danger of being stuck together with the Tories as being out of touch with public concerns and the duty of government to be seen to be visible.

It does the image of the Lib Dems no good at all.

The reason people feel angry "British jobs for British workers" is because the jobs are so few, folks scrabbling for the scraps. Pity we don't have a government who wants to invest, best they can do is beg the Chinese to build factories, it's a feeling against the laissez faire, not my problem approach often cited as classic liberalism mentioned by folks on these forums.

Frankly, with the amount of hate written on this page, I'm surprised that Nick himself hasn't decided to change the group's name to "Nick Clegg decides NOT to meet - for fear of his own safety.". Nothing justifies this kind of hateful language. I welcome freedom of speech; but also also welcome respect for each other even more.

Dave, using the word "twats" on this kind of venue is just out of order. This government is not the first (and won't be the last) to sell off assets to foreign companies. It's been happening for years, as we all know.

Am I angry? Of course, but at the same time, I don't want to start using BNP-style themes like "British jobs for British workers". I don't know the full details of this deal, unfortunately, but would like to be educated, if I've got my facts wrong.

This group is called Nick Clegg Meets - Nick, can I suggest you come along to the demo next week in Derby at the protest against  you pricks closing down the manufacturing of trains in the UK for every. Cross rail is a follow on from themes link so you twats have just given  17 billion of our taxes to the Germans while destroying one of the last remaining UK industries. You incompetent, unthinking selfish  idiots.

You can shove your orange book along with my yellow membership ticket up your asses

yep, just like Sheffield Forgemasters.

the regional governments have a proper enterprise setup with local industry, just see whats happening on the WAG Web site.  The Westminster government is nothing more than a laissez faire neoliberal lobbyist picnic, I also seriously doubt the solution is Chinese markets, Cameron's oft seen trump card.

And yes I am a social liberal because the genuine center left in Scotland and Wales are the only guys who are fighting for industry, jobs and growth, unlike the supposed 'centrists' or 'Liberals' in Westminster who put these issues in the trash can and call it 'market led'.
