I don't believe. As far as I can make it out, there is no god.

If people want to pay to have their offspring indoctrinated I suppose we have to tolerate such a infringement of their offsprings' human rights.

I'm glad to see people are fighting this fight; the sooner we have a truly secular and inclusive education for all children, the better. Faith school should only be privately run and maintained, there is no place for religious spin or bias in the free state education system that all children are entitled to enjoy at the same standard and without a pervasive and intrusive doctrine dominating their education.

I can't find a singe constructive document on the LibDem education forum site concerning the new academies and free schools act or academies in general, all have been removed, its full of dead links.
I think many people agree these new poorly regulated schools are open to all kinds of fringe and religious groups, and we should be ensuring a curriculum driven education for children. The fall of the state comprehensives and realignment to academies can only be bad for secular education in the UK and meritocratic education generally, given issues with the school admissions code and increasing vocationization in some academies.

I've just seen some of the results of the survery that Deniece mentioned below.
"Michael Gove comes under further pressure today, as the Accord Coalition releases the results of a commissioned YouGov online poll which asked the public about if people supported or opposed replacing the laws on collective worship with a requirement that schools, including faith schools, should instead hold assemblies which consider spiritual, moral and ethical issues shared by different religions, as well as by those who are not religious. The proposal was supported by 43% of GB adults and opposed by 30%." [Link]

If the leadership can renege on student tuition fees, then it's hopeless to think that we can rid religious interference from the education of our children.

Humanist & Secularist Liberal Democrats are holding a one day conference on Saturday 20th November at The Directory for Social Change close to Euston Station in London. I hope you may be able to attend.

The theme of the conference is Faith & the Challenges of the Coalition. We will have much to discuss, with legislation to extend academies and introduce free schools already passed, the government now plans changes to curriculum legislation. What chance is there for the removal of compulsory religious worship in schools?

Meanwhile reform of the House of Lords provides new opportunities for us to campaign for the removal of reserved places in the Lords for Church of England bishops. But what are the implications of the Big Society to religious influence in the delivery of public services?

The role of the Humanist & Secularists in the Lib Dems grows as our membership continues to grow. Our ammendment on faith schools to the academies motion was overwhelmingly carried by conference. The day will include our AGM, and an opportunity to discuss our activities in the party, our influence on the coalition and in the wider humanist & secularist movement.

Registration is free to all fully paid up members of HSLD, £10 to non members. Annual membership only costs £10, and if you have not yet renewed, renewal is due from September this year (unless you pay by standing order). Tea, coffee and a good buffet lunch is also available for £10.

Email me if you would like a registration form.
