We've got Welsh Secretary Cheryl Gillan coming to the school next Feb. Should be a really good event this time. If you haven't already why not sign up. You may still qualify for the first-timers discount.

Given that the Society only holds one event a year, I suppose it's defensible that there's been no postings since Dec 2010! So, now catch up with the details of the 2012 weekend school on the LG Society website. This time we're having a debate about the Monarchy with Bob Russell MP and a speaker from Republic as well as the usual diet of interesting talks. Loyd George Society

We'll look forward to seeing Scott there. Hopefully the programme will live up to expectations. I am certainly looking forward to all the contributions. Matthew Oakeshott on coalition governments should be a highlight and I am really keen to see the film about Lloyd George, Frances Stevenson and Dame Margaret. Good wishes to all. Graham

Chris Pilkington has kindly emailed the group in case members are not already aware that 'The Great Outsider - David Lloyd George' by
Roy Hattersley has been recently published. It should be available at
Waterstones etc and more cheaply on the internet. There have been mixed reviews but they are generally favourable. It remains to be seen if Hattersley's book establishes itself as the standard single volume biography of LG which the literature has been lacking. You can read some of the reviewes on the LG Society website.

It could well be worth getting in touch with the national lottery body that gives money for community projects as they may be interested in supporting it - especially if you are thinking of marking his birthplace or even his constituency. His constituency may also be interested in supporting a mark to commemorate him if they've not done so already. You would also be able to ask the local party for some help and even ideas as they know the lay-of-the-land at present and what would be appropriate, where to host/hold/place the commemoration. It would also be an idea to contact the Western Mail to see whether they are planning to run a special pull-out on this, if not then it could be a good suggestion. The society could assist them in getting contributions to the pull-out. I would be willing to write something for example and I am sure there are others. They need not be members as well, but individuals that have had a keen interest in LG such as academics, policy think tanks, local historians, particular causes he's associated with for example. Maybe even the guardian would be interested although I am not sure how far ahead they plan but it could be good to get some feedback from them on the idea to start planning and collecting contributions.

These are positive ideas and I will follow them up. I have been in touch with the LG Museum in Llanystumdwy but they did not seem very interested. Perhaps if things gain a bit more momentum we can rope them in. Tks for joining my friends list too. Graham
