Where do we go from here as a party?, not on policy, but as an entity. In my view the current Lib Dem party as we know is toast, at the next General Election. The Old & Sad by-election hid the…Continue

The way forward for the LibDems is to focus on the "middle ground" that most people identify with, by appealing to policies that are innately realistic, sensible, rational, and inclusive. The…Continue

The events of the past six months have been eventful, exciting and turbulent for LibDems. Right now, it is difficult to see where things for the party go from here. Let´s remind ourselves that back…Continue

Green spaces are under threat and although the new less lengthy development arrangements are in hand I think some qualifications need to be sought. English Heritage has a grade system and something similar should be applied to green spaces for example to significant areas of outstanding beauty/rare flora and fauna or to meadowlands in predominately urban areas. In other words hurdles should be jumpled before green spaces are swept away under concrete. It would make brownfield sites more attractive to developers one hopes.
Comment by Paul Luton on March 4, 2012 at 21:47 The Student Tuition Fees fiasco was one which we got into ourselves. How on earth did we get trapped in the Tory Health Service "reform" that is certainly going to cost money we don't have and is opposed by the GPs who are supposed to be running it.

Actually, I believe that the Lib. Dem. leadership did the right thing joining forces with the Conservative party to form a coalition. No betrayal involved at all.
However, I am also totally committed to the wish for a Scottish Parliament running Scotland ... completely, without any interference from London , and full Scottish independence.
Scotland is a separate country with a different culture, different goals and different values. In Europe, Scotland should hold its own seat at the European Parliament.
What would this do to the UK. Well, not much. There would still be the same queen. We would still, under her, have a united kingdom/queendom. Scotland would run Scotland, England would run England, Wales would run Wales and Northern Ireland would run Northern Ireland. The whole point of an apolitical monarch is that she does not get involved in politics. So, we would have a united kingdom, not a united politique.
I have supported the Liberal/Lib. Dem. party for about 50 years now. I think it may be time to say "goodbye".
My parting shot ... beware Cameron! The English bulldog is a very dangerous animal, with more sides than a polyhedron.

Time for LibDem politicians to create a new UK-wide political alliance with the SNP.

This explains what's wrong with the coalition's policy towards the public sector. Not even Thatcher was so ruthless as our current government is. And for less reason...
Comment by Paul Catherall on December 19, 2010 at 22:06 most right wing market reforms have a sweeter policy to make it palatable for folks with ethics or a social conscience, the idea of operating primary schools by profot making companies and disestablishing many safeguards and codes of conduct was offset by the pupil premium and additional "choice" for the consumer, indeed schools were promised the earth to become academies but now find funding has been pulled, if you read about this in the news and on academy company sites you'll see that once the company takes over a school they get very little government funding.
