About Debate Nights

Be part of it

For the first time in British political history, the leaders of the 3 main political parties will go head-to-head for live televised debates. The opening up of political debate in the lead up to the 2010 General Election will mean you can get a better insight in to the policies, styles and personalities put forward.

The Leaders' Debates will take place on the 15th (ITV), 22nd (Sky) and 29th (BBC) April 2010

The Chancellors' Debate will take place on the 29th (Channel 4) March

We want to celebrate these debates and get people involved, meeting, discussing and debating. So why not set up your own 'Debate Nights' party for people to get together and watch the debates; whether this be a party at home, in your local town hall or pub, or online.

How to

It's easy, find a place, set up a TV, get some food and invite people.

Hi Jane, For sure that was the original intention, however, I like the points that Christopher makes below - we need to take stock of how well Nick did in the debates and how we can convert that to votes in the next general election. There will now certainly be more debates in future elections and this is as good a place as any to air our comments on how we can do better.

Regards to all.

I see, I thought it was a group to help organise debate night gatherings.

Surely people are still joining, Jane, to have their say about how the so-called Debates (ie, party politicals from behind a podium) can be improved for future elections, and to keep the sparks Nick created in the forefront of public consciousness.

One of the truly irritating things about the Party's organisation since I first joined the Liberals during the Lib-Lab Pact of the 1970s is how often perfectly effective and workable initiatives (such as giving members their say on the central role of TV in campaigns) are ditched when the creator of the idea moves on to their next wizard scheme, or today's fad drowns out all else.

My wife and I knew Tim Farron had held on to his seat with a massively increased majority not when Nick "won" the first "Debate", nor on the morning after the Poll, but months ago when TV news reports here in the NW featured him night-after-night helping residents with the Cumbrian floods.

That goodwill did not wash away. So let's work out together what it was that created Cleggmania in the first place, and how other Lib Dem campaigners can win some of that stardust for their own attempts to get elected - long-term benefit as well as instantaneous pizzazz, please.

Curious -- why are people still joining debate nights?

I was disappointed that Nick did not really manage (despite repetition) to get his message over about illegal immigrants. I don't think the constant harping on about criminal gangs helped. This is an issue of justice and common sense...and overall the debate on immigration was couched solely in negative language. (It was only Cameron who bothered even to refer to the good things Britain has gained from immigrants, and it left the way clear later on for BNP and UKIP commentators to sound only a little bit more extreme than the three of them. of course there have to be rules and qualifications, but let Britain be proud of its openness and generosity, not defensive and dismissive.

Why did Nick not say we are spending 100 BILLION on trident.. instead of saying as he did.... a lot of money ..

If you haven't got Sky you can watch the debate tonight on BBC News or listen on BBC Radio 4

International affairs -have read Clegg could be accused of being weak on defense.
Blair & Brown botched that up by invading Iraq so increasing the cost of defense tenfold.with the full support of the Tories.

If he can point out the vast sums being wasted, that defence needs to be streamlined and made much more efficent

Don't forget that a controlled biteback may go down well. People like a bit of passion; Brown's black moods enhanced his reputation & remember the student who snapped back at Paxman on University Challenge ? My point is that, if the opportunity arises, a putdown from Lab/Conservatives should be thrown back if available.
